Hospitals in Taiwan can be public hospitals, private hospitals, and corporate hospitals. On the basis of type of medical treatment provided, they can be categorized into general hospital, chronic disease hospital, and psychiatric hospital. At the end of year 2004, there were 590 hospitals in Taiwan. Of these, 556 were hospitals of Western medicine and 34 were hospitals of Chinese medicine. Taiwan specializes in areas, such as liver disease treatment, dental care, craniofacial surgery, liver transplant, craniofacial surgery, cardiovascular surgery, artificial insemination and joint replacement surgery.

According to the Taiwanese government, Taiwan provides the dual benefits of excellent medical care and low prices. Taiwan is seeking to improve its foreign language and marketing skills to obtain a leading edge in this industry.

The National Taiwan University Hospital has launched a new service for foreign patients. Initially, the hospital will aim at bringing in more foreign patients. Later on, the hospital plans to launch an international publicity campaign focusing on Taiwan's excellent health facilities and low-cost treatment to bring in more foreign medical tourists.

Visa to Taiwan

If you are a citizen of United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, United States, or of some other European Union nations, you can stay for periods up to 30 days without a visa, provided you have passports valid for six months. But, it is not possible to extend this visa-free stay period beyond 30 days. If you are a nationals of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovak Republic and Slovenia, you will require a visa.
Nationals of Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovak Republic have the facility of applying for a landing visa when they arrive at CKS International Airport or Kaohsiung International Airport. But, this is only possible if they hold a ticket for an onward destination and there is no criminal history on their record.
